The Art of Songmaking

Overview

Songwriting is an alchemical art, transforming sound and story into a multilayered expression of our world. There is no wrong way to do it, but there are ways to make that expression more effective and authentic. This workshop is a space for us to hone our craft and get closer to the heart of what we want to say and how we want to say it. It's also a space that recognizes that sometimes it's hard to know where to start when writing a song, or it can be difficult to stay motivated. Within the support and structure of this workshop environment, you'll learn new tools for catalyzing your creations and receive the tender nudge you may need to double-down on your love for the craft.

Over the course of five sessions, we will dissect the anatomy of a song, learning what makes a compelling melody, lyric, chord progression, and more. Each session, we’ll spend some time doing in-person writing exercises, and then you'll be given a prompt to try on your own that will lead you to write a new song. You'll share your work with me and in small groups, receive supportive feedback, and practice deep listening. By the end of our time together, you'll have an EP's worth of new material and, I hope, a deeper sense of who you are as a songwriter.

Meeting Times

Beginning on January 14, we'll meet every other week on Zoom on Sundays from 1-3:30pm ET.

January 14, January 28, February 11, February 25, March 10

Testimonials

“This songwriting workshop helped me break a years long writer's block. The first prompt lead to the first song I had written in several years. I loved working with everyone in the group and I loved the challenge of writing to prompts. It forced me to think differently about my process and I'd definitely take the workshop again.”

“Nandi has such a gift for teaching and community-building. Her passion and expertise shined in the thoughtfully crafted curriculum, and I cherished learning from and with our group of songwriters. Feeling equipped and inspired to continue creating.”

“Nandi's class was the highlight of my year. Her feedback on songs is helpful and thoughtful, I felt cared for as a student. My notes from these classes are something I will harken back to, always. This class made me feel energized in my songwriting and empowered to keep going. The accountability and structure have been incredible for my process.”

“Nandi's workshop was enlightening, inspiring, and exactly what I needed to expand my songwriting palette! I appreciate the supportive artistic space that was created. The workshop wasn't simply about how to write a song, but instead about finding and forging new paths in the songmaking journey. I would highly recommend Nandi's workshop to any songwriter, whether you're just starting out or have been writing for years!”

“Nandi puts such care and effort into crafting these songwriting sessions. Each class was unique, interesting, and accessible for all of her students. The small class sizes, paired with Nandi's receptivity to questions and conversation made this one of the best classes I've ever taken. This class helped me become a better listener and a braver songwriter.”

“Nandi managed to orchestrate a class that simultaneously helped me to feel confident in my preexistent songwriting instincts and inspired to try out a raft of new harmonic, lyrical, and structural ideas she introduced in her lively lectures. I finished the class with a bundle of new songs that I never otherwise would have written, thanks to Nandi’s inventive prompts, as well as a notebook full of ideas on how to improve them, thanks to her and classmates’ thorough feedback.”
